If you’re planning a Hood River wedding, congratulations! You are getting married in one of the most beautiful places in the PNW. Not only is the natural landscape stunning, it also boasts some of the most gorgeous venues. If you currently live in the area, you might be well versed in the quirks and beauty of the area. If you are planning a destination wedding and unfamiliar with the area, you’ll want to read on. I’ll share some helpful tips for planning along with photos from real weddings for inspiration.

Tip #1 – Befriend the wind
Hood River Weddings are famous for their beautiful views, yet infamous for the wild wind. Yes, you should factor wind into your vision of your wedding day. The Gorge is a natural wind tunnel and you should absolutely expect the afternoon to be windy. As a photographer, it is a dream. We get natural movement and photos that feel alive. You might have a different feeling about it… it can be annoying to have your hair and veil constantly blowing in your face. Your design choices may be affected by the weather… etc. Make sure to hire a planner that is experienced with weddings in Hood River and you will be golden. The wind does not have to be a problem, embrace it and expect it and you’ll avoid the surprise!

Tip #2 – Don’t expect a view
Ok hear me out… I understand this is a huge draw for a lot of couples. The views of enormous snowy mountains are remarkable, but you are getting married in the PNW. The weather is unpredictable at best. You could end up with thick clouds, grey & rainy skies, fog, or even smoke from wildfires. You can still be excited for the views of the mountains but understand nature has it’s own plans and nothing is guaranteed. If you go into your wedding day with flexibility, you will avoid potential frustration and disappointment.

Tip #3 – Have a backup plan
One word – rain. The reason we are all drawn to the PNW and it’s beauty is the same reason you need a plan B. Yes, rain can even happen in the summer. You are less likely to experience rain in June and July but any other month is subject to random showers. Most venues in the PNW have indoor options for this exact reason, but talk with your planner about what to expect if it rains.

Tip #4 – Hire a planner
This one is not specific to Hood River but had to be mentioned regardless. A planner will make your entire experience better in every single way. Hire someone that is experienced and confident with weddings in the Gorge. They provide immense value and deserve an entire separate blog post. If you haven’t already hired a wedding planner, do it now and thank me later.

Tip #5 – Book Lodging Early
All of the things that make this area so lovely also make it a popular destination spot. In the warmer months, lodging fills up quickly. You’ll want to lock down your dates as early as you can because spaces are limited. Your venue will have recommendations on places to stay nearby.

Tip #6 – Consider a shuttle service
Most venues will already require this but if yours doesn’t I’d highly recommend considering one anyway. Venues can be off a busy highway and removed from the center of town. Ubers can be limited and harder to come by in this area. A safe option for guests who have been drinking is always the right call.

Tip #7 – Double down on guest experience
Hood River is an amazing place to explore. It offers plenty of wineries, breweries, hikes, coffee shops, etc. Use this to your full advantage and create a whole wedding weekend experience for your guests. Do some research and map out a few places for your guests to visit and enjoy, especially if they are traveling and are not familiar with the area. Your planner will also be a great resource for ideas.
